The Embassy of the Republic of Maldives in Washington, D.C. exhibited the Maldives cultural heritage at the third annual “Fashioning Power, Fashioning Peace” Exhibition and Gala, organized by the Advisory Council of the Woodrow Wilson House.
At this year’s exhibition, the Embassy featured a contemporary interpretation of the royal attire worn by the country’s last monarch, Al-Sultan Mohamed Fareedul Awwal. r. (1954-1968). This historic ceremonial outfit, as reinterpreted and created by the talented Maldives designer, Moonii (Moonisa Abdulla Luthfi), was proudly showcased under the category of garments associated with Leadership at the Exhibition. Her creative vision reflected themes of power through heritage and peace through the respectful continuity of tradition. Moonii is currently a Design Lecturer at the Maldives Polytechnic
The Fashioning Power, Fashioning Peace Exhibition and Gala, brings together diplomatic missions in the United States to share their cultural identity, stories of heritage and pride, supporting the broader objectives of peace and unity. The exhibition will remain open to the public, welcoming visitors to explore diverse cultural expressions presented by participating countries.
This is the third consecutive year that the Embassy is participating in the “fashioning power and fashioning peace” exhibition. Previously, it presented traditional women’s attire Dhiguhedhun and Kasabu libaas, that symbolizes Maldivian identity and craftsmanship. This year’s presentation is curated to reflect its rich monarchial history, alongside the enduring values and stories passed down through generations.
The Maldive Embassy is proud to participate in this prestigious gala event, as we celebrate the growing friendship and cooperation between the Maldives and the United States through six decades of diplomatic relations. This year marks the 60th anniversary of the establishment of official diplomatic relations between the two countries.
