The Maldives Marks 50 Years of Membership in the Organization of Islamic Cooperation (OIC)

Today, the Maldives commemorates fifty years of membership in the Organisation of Islamic Cooperation (OIC). Over the past five decades, the Maldives has deepened its ties with fellow Muslim nations and worked tirelessly to advance issues of critical importance within the Organisation. As we mark this milestone, we reflect on the shared Islamic values that bind the Member States and resonate deeply with the Maldivian people.

The active role the Maldives has played within the OIC stands as a testament to its commitment to the common interests of the Organisation and the wider Muslim Ummah. These engagements include participation in Islamic Summits, the Council of Foreign Ministers Meetings, and other high-level forums. The Maldives has also contributed to advancing the inalienable rights of the Palestinian people, the pursuit of justice for the Rohingya Muslims, and support for other communities confronting hardship across the global Muslim community.

As a small state, the Maldives is deeply grateful for the platform the OIC provides to engage on issues of shared importance, from women's empowerment to cooperation in tourism. OIC Member States have remained invaluable partners in strengthening the Maldives economic resilience and have contributed significantly to its climate and socio-economic initiatives.

The Organisation of Islamic Cooperation, comprising 57 Member States, remains a strong advocate for the Palestinian cause and a vital forum for addressing the challenges facing the Muslim Ummah. As it marks fifty years of membership since joining in 1976, the Maldives reaffirms its enduring commitment to the solidarity and values of the Organisation, and to strengthening collective efforts to build a more peaceful, secure, and prosperous future for the Ummah.
